There is a good reason why the word “architect” is frequently used in other fields. An architect has the capacity to recognize a complex problem, visualize an outcome and draw on the expertise of a wide range of fields to resolve it. Architecture is a broad church. It is also a generalist profession in a world that is becoming increasingly specialized. Architectural training gives us the tools to think broadly and strategically across many issues and to understand the nuances each project brings.
In this Dossier we look at people who have trained in architecture and are now working in other fields. These people are sometimes described as “lapsed architects.” The term “lapsed” has a negative connotation but we see them in a more positive light – they are expanding the field. Shining a light on these professionals gives us a clearer perspective on what architects do and how architectural training can contribute more broadly.
